Electric Vehicles in Rural_TR News 349.JPG

Building Out U.S. Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Must Include Rural Areas

Rural residents drive greater distances and spend more on fuel and vehicle maintenance than their urban counterparts. Electric vehicles could help reduce those disparities, but federal and state programs to build charging infrastructure along America’s major highways risk bypassing remote communities, where such facilities remain few and far between. Read the article by authors from the FHWA Western Federal Lands Highway Division and the U.S. Department of Transportation Volpe Center in the January-March 2024 issue of TR News (Issue 349).

Black Households are More Burdened by Vehicle Ownership than White Households

Previous assessements of transportation spending between races did not differentiate by vehicle-ownership status, which depressed overall transportation spending by Black households, which are three times as likely as white households not to have access to a car and, thus, spend comparatively little on transportation. When these experiences are isolated, 76% of Black households with vehicles are burdened by transportation spending compared with 60% of white households, according to a new study published in TRB's Transportation Research Record journal and summarized by Sage Perspectives.

TRB In the News

Wrong Way Crashes_NCHRP WOD 357.JPG

There are around 360 wrong-way driver deaths annually in the United States, reports KTNV Las Vegas, citing a 2023 report from TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program. Evidence is mounting that the numbers may be higher that this over the most recent years.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing systems allow researchers to inspect and characterize pavements, retaining walls, and embankments from space and can help determine if there are flaws that should be further inspected for repair. This research, published in TRB's Transportation Research Record journal, is featured by AZO Robotics.
