New TRB Publications

Airborne disease NCHRP TCRP.jpg

Nearly 80 million travelers in the U.S. are expected to go 50 miles or more later this week for Thanksgiving, which would be an increase from last year of about 2 million. Bus services, for one example, are reporting a surge in demand. Two new reports this week from TRB should help assure travelers that the transportation industry is working hard to safeguard travel for Thanksgiving and beyond. NCHRP Web-Only Document 410/TCRP Web-Only Document 78: Protecting Transportation Employees and the Traveling Public from Airborne Diseases and Mitigating Exposure to Airborne Diseases for Public Transportation Passengers and Employees: Executive Summary, both from TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program and Transit Cooperative Research Program, highlight practical strategies for reducing the risk of airborne disease transmission.

As of 2023, two-thirds of the 51 state departments of transportation had established some form of agency-level data governance or were actively exploring setting up data governance in their agencies. NCHRP Web-Only Document 419: Implementing Data Governance at Transportation Agencies, Volume 1: Implementation Guide and NCHRP Web-Only Document 419: Implementing Data Governance at Transportation Agencies, Volume 2: Communications Guide explore lessons learned and successful practices of these early adopters.

TR News_Culvert.JPG

Corrugated steel culverts under roads primarily deteriorate on the interior floor due to corrosion and abrasion. High-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (HPFRC) invert linings offer a durable, cost-effective repair solution with superior water and salt resistance due to low permeability and minimal cracking. However, HPFRC linings raise environmental concerns due to their chemical composition and may impede water flow by reducing the culvert's cross-sectional area. Read the full "Research Pays Off" article on Page 34 of TR News 351, the latest issue of TRB's quarterly magazine.

TRB's Top Downloaded Publication in November: NCHRP Synthesis 636: AI Applications for Automatic Pavement Condition Evaluation (released November 8, 2024)

News to Know

Cameron Ishaq.jpg

Get involved with the TRB Standing Technical Committee on Native American Transportation Issues during Native American Heritage Month. Cameron Ishaq of Fasterhorse consulting and #TRBvolunteer says, “Serving as a member of AME30 is more than just a way to shape the future of needed research on Tribal transportation. We’re working hard to address the real-world issues affecting our traditionally under-served and under-resourced Tribal communities in a way that respects their unique cultural heritage. To add my experience to that of my colleagues to develop solutions for Tribes is as personally rewarding as anything I’ve done in my career.”

Brandon McIntyre.jpg

Brandon McIntyre of Foxwoods Resort Casino and also a committee member says, “I’m inspired by the chance to serve and strengthen our community. Through this work, we’re building pathways—not just across our land, but toward a more connected and resilient future for our people.”
