Pollinator Habitat Conservation Along Roadways
NCHRP Web Only Document 362: Pollinator Habitat Conservation Along Roadways
Download
Pollinating insect populations are declining, and if widely distributed insect populations continue to decline, listing those species under the Endangered Species Act may result. If listed, capacity improvement projects and right-of-way (ROW) maintenance practices may negatively affect or “take” these listed species. As a result, there is increased interest in protecting pollinators along roadways. State departments of transportation (DOTs) and other transportation agencies are encouraged to establish or conserve pollinator habitats along their ROW. This research presents 16 regional guidebooks and tools to share knowledge of successful practices and lessons learned from states where pollinator species are listed and to show how to implement integrated pollinator habitat programs.
