TRB’s SHRP 2 Tuesdays Webinar: Analysis of In-Vehicle Field Study Data and Countermeasure Implications

As part of the SHRP2 Tuesdays Webinar series, TRB conducted a webinar on July 22, 2014 from 10:00am to 11:30am ET that presented the results of SHRP 2 Projects that analyzed Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) and Roadway Information (RID) data to address three high-priority topics: safety on rural two-lane curves, gap-acceptance behavior at offset left-turn lanes, and driver inattention in situations that could lead to rear-end crashes.

The objectives of these SHRP 2 projects (S08A, S08B, and S08D) were to design or refine cost-effective measures to reduce road departure crashes, to help state departments of transportation design left-turn lanes that reduce the likelihood of crashes and increase efficiency for permissive left-turns, and to reduce rear-end crashes. These projects also provided the first detailed analysis of NDS and RID data. The reports will help other NDS and RID data users establish efficient methods to identify, extract, and analyze the data. The SHRP 2 report, Initial Analyses from the SHRP 2 Naturalistic Driving Study: Addressing Driver Performance and Behavior in Traffic Safety, summarizes the initial proof-of-concept work in these projects and provides background on their research questions and methods.

There is no fee to attend webinars in the SHRP2 Tuesdays series, however, participants must register in advance. A certificate for 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDH) will be provided to attendees who register and attend the webinar as an individual.

Webinar Outline

    •      PART 1: Brief overview of SHRP 2 mission, objectives of the Safety focus area and related SHRP 2 research.
    •      PART 2: How driver, roadway, and environmental characteristics affect the risk of lane departure on rural two-lane curves.
    •      PART 3: How left-turn lane offset affect driver gap-acceptance behavior.
    •      PART 4: Safer glances, driver inattention, and crash risk in lead-vehicle following situations.
    •      PART 5: Question and answer session.

The first 60 minutes of the webinar are for presentations and the final 30 minutes are reserved for audience questions.


Learning Objectives
After completion of this SHRP2 Tuesday Webinar, attendees were be able to:

    •      Describe how driver behaviors and interactions with roadway characteristics increase the risk of crashes;
    •      Discuss cost-effective measures to reduce road departure crashes, warn inattentive drivers, and design intersections that minimize crash risk; and
    •      Identify efficient methods to identify, extract, and analyze NDS data.

Professional Development Hour Information
A certificate for 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDH) were provided to Professional Engineers (PEs) who register and attend the webinar as an individual. For groups, only the person that registered and attended the session received a PDH certificate.
