TRB's SHRP 2 Tuesdays Webinar: DOT and Railroad Collaborations: Best Practices for Expediting Agreements and Successfully Delivering Projects (R16)

As part of the SHRP2 Tuesdays Webinar Series, TRB conducted a webinar on July 9, 2013 from 2:00 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. ET that explored how streamlining the coordination of public agency and railroad procedures may avoid delays, find solutions to conflict, and improve outcomes for both parties.

View the webinar recording.

The presence of a highway across or alongside a railroad creates significant challenges to the rapid renewal of that highway facility. Moreover, freight analysis predicts an 88% increase in rail freight from 2002 to 2035. Highway renewal projects will also increase dramatically in the upcoming years as the highway infrastructure continues to age and require reconstruction. This project addresses how the issue of cooperation between railroads and public transportation agencies is more critical than ever. The research report is available online.

Webinar Presenters:
Shobna Varma, StarIsis Corporation
Joe Taylor, Federal Highway Administration

Moderated by: Jerry DiMaggio, Transportation Research Board

Webinar Outline:
  • Part 1: Brief overview of SHRP 2 mission, objectives of the Renewal focus area and of SHRP 2 research
  • Part 2: Problems and Perspectives of DOTs and Railroads
  • Part 3: Examples of Best Practices and Processes
  • Part 4: Implementing the Partnership Process at Project and Program Levels
  • Part 5: Sustaining Best Practices and Model Processes
  • Part 6: Benefits and Impact on Practice
  • Part 7: Implementation Plans and Opportunities
  • Part 8: Question and Answer session
The first 60 minutes of the webinar is for presentations and the final 30 minutes is reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives:
  • To understand highway agency and railroad perspectives to facilitate collaboration and expedite project delivery.
  • To learn about existing successful practices between highway agencies and railroads that can be customized and adopted to address specific state and railroad requirements.
  • To learn how to implement partnering and continuous improvement processes for long-term success in expediting coordination and highway–railroad project delivery.
  • To describe the research outcomes and products from the SHRP 2 R16 project and the benefits of adopting them in local practice by both railroads and highway agencies.
  • To increase knowledge of potential implementation strategies, tactics and opportunities for the R16 Product.
