TRB’s SHRP 2 Tuesdays Webinar: SHRP 2 Strategic Approaches at the Corridor and Network Levels to Minimize Disruption from the Renewal Process (R11)

TRB’s SHRP 2 Tuesdays Webinar: SHRP 2 Strategic Approaches at the Corridor and Network Levels to Minimize Disruption from the Renewal Process (R11)

As part of the SHRP2 Tuesdays Webinar Series, TRB conducted a webinar on June 10, 2014, from 2:00pm to 3:30pm ET that summarized SHRP 2 Project R11: SHRP 2 Strategic Approaches at the Corridor and Network Levels to Minimize Disruption from the Renewal Process.

View a link to the recorded webinar.

Project R11 produced software to analyze the impacts on road users of multiple, concurrent work zones across a network or complex corridor, and a user’s guide. This tool will help agencies assess the optimal sequencing of renewal projects, and help determine the cost-effectiveness of strategies to minimize, manage, and mitigate road user costs from safety or operational perspectives. The Work zone Impact Strategy Estimator (WISE) software is fully developed and is currently being tested in Iowa and Arizona using historical data to validate its parameters. In addition, pilot tests in New York and Florida will use the software to analyze projects currently in the planning phase.

Webinar Presenters
  • Dane Ismart, The Louis Berger Group, Inc.
  • Tracy Scriba, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
  • Jawad Paracha, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)

Moderated by: David Plazak, Transportation Research Board

Webinar Outline

  • PART 1: Brief overview of the SHRP 2 mission, objectives of the Renewal focus area, and related SHRP 2 research
  • PART 2: Presentation on the SHRP 2 R11 Research Project, and WISE Software
  • PART 3: FHWA’s perspective on R11
  • PART 4: Question and answer session

The first 60 minutes of the webinar were for presentations and the final 30 minutes were reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants were be able to:

  • Identify and document effective practices for executing highway renewal activities as they affect the corridor and network level;
  • Describe instances and examples of the transportation agency and project organizational designs that are most and least compatible with these effective practices;
  • Understand how the WISE software and associated methodologies can benefit their organization by measuring risks from the perspective of constructability, funding, economic/environmental/social constraints, and congestion and safety impacts;
  • Provide guidance to their organization on selecting appropriate tools, techniques, performance measures, and practices during project development; and
  • Assess and develop training needs and materials relevant to their agency in order to further incorporate the R11 research findings and software into planning and programming.
