ACTIVE SUBPROGRAMS

Transit Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) Program (J-04)

The Transit IDEA Program is designed to foster innovative concepts that have the potential to enhance security, increase ridership, improve efficiency for transit agencies, and protect the environment. IDEA programs differ from traditional research programs in two ways: IDEA projects are initiated by researchers rather than by a request for proposals, and funding can support initial testing of unproven concepts.

Legal Aspects of Transit and Intermodal Transportation Programs (J-05)

The TCRP subprogram, Legal Aspects of Transit and Intermodal Transportation Programs, has been focused on providing legal research on topics of interest to the transit legal community. Project findings are published in TCRP's Legal Research Digest series, which provides transit attorneys with a single repository of authoritative and well-researched papers on the issues affecting them and their clients.

Synthesis of Information Related to Transit Practices (J-07)

A wealth of information exists on nearly every subject of concern to the transit industry. The purpose of this subprogram is to synthesize useful knowledge from all available sources and prepare documented reports on current practices in relevant subject areas.

Quick Response Research on Long-Term Strategic Issues (J-11)

The objective of this TCRP subprogram is to provide research assistance, as needed, to support various APTA activities on behalf of the transit industry. This subprogram provides a mechanism for responding quickly to research problems that demand immediate attention.

Research for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Standing Committee on Public Transportation (NCHRP 20-65)

This subprogram comprises a program of quick-response research responding to public transportation issues that are of importance to the Standing Committee on Public Transportation, AASHTO, and state departments of transportation.

COMPLETED SUBPROGRAMS

International Transit Studies Program (J-03)

The purpose of this program was to broaden the professional development of U.S. transit managers by providing them with opportunities to visit transit systems abroad, returning with insights and knowledge useful to their organizations, the transit industry, and their own transit career advancement.

Quick Response for Special Needs (J-06)

The TCRP Oversight and Project Selection (TOPS) Committee approved a special fund for allocation to special research needs. A TOPS task force was responsible for approving tasks initiated under this subprogram. Research was completed on 83 topics.

Public Transportation Security Research (J-10)

Emergencies arising from terrorist threats highlight the need for transportation managers to minimize the vulnerability of people and assets through incident prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. The objective of this program was to provide flexible, ongoing, quick-response research on transportation security issues.
