Social Media is Clicking for State DOTs

Barriers to using social media for emergencies for state departments of transportation are personnel availability and training, privacy issues, and data reliability.

This is among the findings in Leveraging Social Media Data for Emergency Preparedness and Response (NCHRP Synthesis 610). One of the case studies in the report highlights Caltrans, which uses social media to communicate with the public during emergencies. The agency monitors social media to get real-time information about incidents as well as public opinion.

13th International Conference on Low-Volume Roads (TR Circular E-C283)

Postwar Commercial Properties and Section 106: A Methodology for Evaluating Historic Significances (NCHRP Research Report 1067)

Corrosion Protection of Steel Bridges Using Duplex Coating Systems (NCHRP Research Report 1048)

Valuation and Compensation Approaches in Utility Accommodation: A Guide (NCHRP Research Report 1053)

Valuation and Compensation for Accommodating Utility and Communications Installations in Public Rights-of-Way (NCHRP Web-Only Document 359)

News for You

Nominate Yourself or Others for BTSCRP Panels

Lend your expertise engaging underserved populations, child passenger safety, reduced traffic enforcement, impaired driving, and/or teen crash rates to TRB's Behavioral Traffic Safety Cooperative Research Program. Nominate individuals with expertise directly relevant to the research to serve as a project panelist by July 28.

Advance the State-of-Practice

The U.S. Domestic Scan program brings highly-experienced mid-career and senior agency professionals into direct personal contact with those applying new ideas to advance the state-of-practice. State departments of transportation, AASHTO committee/council members, and FHWA offices may submit a topic by September 15.

TRB In the News

Recycling in Infrastructure.JPG

"Incorporating plastic waste into asphalt pavement and other types of infrastructure projects shows some limited promise ... but those efforts are hampered by an American recycling system that lacks clear economic and environmental goals and suffers from a dearth of scientific and engineering information," notes Inside Climate News. This was one of many news articles covering the latest TRB consensus report.

Following TRB's Automated Road Transportation Symposium, The Mobility Podcast aired a discussion about the event in San Francisco. In other automated-vehicle news, TRB's Transportation Research Record published a journal article finding that people who were initially excited about AVs became less so after actually using one. It also found that people were more likely to do activities like watching the road and looking out the window while in an AV than they expected.
