Airport Environmental Interactions Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A two-member team from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of California, Berkeley received top honors in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Smart Gate System for 400Hz Power Monitoring at Airports. Dr. Jasenka Rakas served as faculty adviser. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - A three-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University placed second in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Identifying Effective Method to Collect and Recycle Aircraft De-icing Fluids for Non-hub Primary Airports. Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty adviser. Full Design - Updated

Airport Operation and Maintenance Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A three-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University received top honors in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, Augmented Reality Airport Training System. Dr. Mary Johnson and Professor Timothy Ropp served as faculty advisers. Full Design

Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A three-member team from the Aviation Institute at the University of Nebraska at Omaha received top honors in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, IoT in the Cockpit: Intelligent Runway Status Indication System (IRSIS). Dr. Chenyu Huang served as faculty adviser. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - A four-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University placed second in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, Taxiwayz Airport Ground Mapping System. Dr. Sarah Hubbard served as faculty adviser. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - A four-member team from the Engineering Leadership Department at Penn State University placed third in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, Virtual Moving Map. Dr. Meredith Handley served as faculty adviser. Full Design

Airport Management and Planning Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - Two proposals tied for first place in the Airport Management and Planning category, one from Rutgers University and the other from the Purdue University.
    1. A three-member team from the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University won with its design titled, Addressing Airport Congestion as Traffic Takes Off in the Age of Uber and Lyft. Dr. Michael Smart served as faculty advisor. Full Design
    2. A three-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University won with its design titled, Proposal of Mobile Application Design for Aging Travelers in Commercial Airports. Dr. Mary Johnson and Dr. Anne Lucietto served as faculty advisors. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - A four-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University placed second in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, Harnessing Cloud Computing and Deep Learning for Flight Delay Prediction to Improve Airport Management and Planning: Flight Foresight. Dr. John Mott served as faculty adviser. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - A five-member team from the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Missouri – Columbia placed third in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, Airport Parking System Design in the Age of Autonomous Vehicles. Dr. Carlos Sun served as faculty adviser. Full Design

Honorable Mentions given to:

A four-member team from the from the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Missouri - Columbia won an honorable mention in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Green Engineered Material Arresting System Design. Dr. Carlos Sun served as faculty adviser.

A five-member team from the from the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Missouri - Columbia won an honorable mention in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, Smart Pavement Damage Monitoring System for Runways System Design. Dr. Carlos Sun served as faculty adviser.

A four-member team from the from the Engineering Leadership Development Program at Penn State University won an honorable mention in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, Near Field Communication (NFC) Airport Baggage Tags. Dr. Meredith Handley served as faculty adviser.
