Airport Environmental Interactions Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - The Department of Engineering Management at the School of Systems and Enterprises at Stevens Institute of Technology captured first place for its design titled “Green Gates Locally Powered Gate Electrification System.” Professor Eirik Hole advised the student team. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - The Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering Department at the University of Colorado Boulder won second place for its design titled, “LED Runway Lighting for Denver International Airport.” The team was advised by Professor Angela Bielefeldt. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - Two submissions from the Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering Department at the University of Colorado Boulder tied for third place for their designs titled, “Aerated Gravel Beds for De-Icing Waste Treatment” and “Improvements to Deicing Environmental Management System at Denver International Airport.” The teams were advised by Professor Angela Bielefeldt. Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A team from the Human Factors and Systems and the Applied Aviation Sciences Departments at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Daytona Beach, won first place for its design titled, “iTaxi - Total Runway Awareness.” Professors Kelly Neville and Martin Lauth advised. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - The Computer Science Department at Binghamton University - State University of New York captured first place for its design titled, “Runway Excursion Modeling and Analysis: A Web-Based Geographic Information System Solution.” Professor William Ziegler advised the student team. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - A team from the Aviation Technology Department at Purdue University won third place for its design titled, “Dual Image Grooved Sign (DIGS).” The team was advised by Professor Timothy Ropp. Full Design

Airport Operations And Maintenance Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - The Computer Science Department at Binghamton University - State University of New York captured first place for its design titled ,“Web-Based Smartphone Application for Pavement Analysis: A Geographic Information System Approach.” Professor William Ziegler advised the student team. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - The Mechanical Engineering Department at Tufts University won second place for its design titled, “FODHippo: An Automated Debris Collection System for Airport Runways.” The team was advised by Professors Gary Leisk, Jason Rife and Dan Hannon. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - A team from the Human Factors and Systems and the Applied Aviation Sciences Departments at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Daytona Beach, won third place for its design titled, “eMerge.” Professors Kelly Neville and Martin Lauth advised. Full Design

Airport Management and Planning Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A team from the Center for Aviation Studies at The Ohio State University won first place for its submission titled, “”Terminal Buddy”: Design and development of a mobile digital inspection, dispatch, and data analysis application to improve airport terminal operations management.” Professor Seth Young advised the students. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - A student from the Mathematics Department at The College of William and Mary captured second place for her design titled “A Tabu Search Approach to Tactical Runway Configuration Managment.” Professor Rex Kincaid advised the student. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - A team from the Mechanical, Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at the University of Rhode Island won third place for its design titled “Obstruction Measurement Device.” Professor Bahram Nassersharif was the team advisor. Full Design
