Airport Environmental Interactions Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A four-member team from the School of Engineering at Roger Williams University, received top honors in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, “Piezoelectric Carpet System (PECS) - Design of a Self-Sustaining Affordable Energy Generating System for Airports.” Dr. Linda Riley served as faculty advisor. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - A four-member team from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley placed second in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, “Airport Smart Drainage System.” Dr. Jasenka Rakas served as faculty advisor. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - A three-member team from the Aviation Department at San Jose State University placed third in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, “Harvesting Energy from Biodegradable Waste.” Professor Glynn Falcon served as faculty advisor. Full Design

Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A four-member team from the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Rhode Island received top honors in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, “Eye in the Sky – Drone Detection and Tracking System.” Dr. Bahram Nassersharif served as faculty advisor. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - A three-member team from the Mechanical Engineering Department at Tufts University placed second in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, “Preventing Runway Incursions: A Vehicle Monitoring and Alert System Using RFID Technology.” Professor Maureen Mulcare served as faculty advisor. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - Two proposals tied for third place in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category, one from the University of Missouri - Columbia and the other from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
    1. The three-member team from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Missouri - Columbia won with its design titled, “TAXI NAVIGATION - A Runway Safety System.” Dr. Carlos Sun served as faculty advisor. Full Design
    2. Sharing third place was the six-member team from the Human Factors and Systems Department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with its design titled, “Improving Runway Incursion Safety (IRIS).” Dr. Kelly Neville and Assistant Professor Martin Lauth served as faculty advisors. Full Design

Airport Operations And Maintenance Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - Two proposals tied for first place in the Airport Operations and Maintenance category, one from Roger Williams University, and the other from Binghamton University - State University of New York.
    1. The two-member team from the School of Engineering at Roger Williams University won with its design titled, “Foreign Object Debris Removal Machine (FRM).” Dr. Linda Riley served as faculty advisor. Full Design
    2. Sharing first place was the nine-member team from the University Scholars Program at Binghamton University - State University of New York University with its design titled, “An Automated System for Managing Vegetative Obstructions.” Professors Chad Nixon and William Ziegler served as faculty advisors. Full Design

Airport Management and Planning Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A two-member team from the School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University received top honors in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, “Funding Essential Air Service to Small Community Airports through Data Driven Decisions.” Professor Steven Landry served as faculty advisor. Full Design

Honorable Mentions given to:

A four-member team from the from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Missouri - Columbia won an honorable mention in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, “Runway Incursions - Safety Performance Functions.” Dr. Carlos Sun served as faculty advisor.

A four-member team from the from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Missouri - Columbia won an honorable mention in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, “Design of Solar Tiles as Surface Pavement for Airfields: A Feasibility Study.” Dr. Carlos Sun served as faculty advisor.

A two-member team from the from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the North Dakota State University won an honorable mention in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, “Grand Forks International Airport Runway 17R-35L Reconstruction.” Dr. Amiy Varma served as faculty advisor.

A four-member team from the from the Center for Aviation Studies/Civil Engineering Department at Ohio State University won an honorable mention in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, “Savvy Air Mobile App.” Dr. Seth Young served as faculty advisor.
