Airport Environmental Interactions Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A six-member team from the Department of Environmental Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder, received top honors in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Mycoremediation Applications for Stormwater Management. Dr. Chris Corwin served as faculty advisor. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - A two-member team from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey placed second in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Life-Cycle Assessment of Airport Pavement Design Alternatives for Energy and Environmental Impacts. Dr. Hao Wang served as faculty advisor. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - A three-member team from the Aviation and Transportation Technology Department at Purdue University placed third in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Incorporating Renewable Power into Major U.S. Airports. Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty advisor. Full Design

Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A four-member team from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst received top honors in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, Airport Secure Perimeter Control System (ASPECTS). Dr. Daiheng Ni and Dr. Douglas Looze served as faculty advisors. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - A two-member team from the Aviation and Transportation Technology Department at Purdue University placed second in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, “Touchscreen Airtraffic Management System (TAMS).” Professor Timothy Ropp served as faculty advisor. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - An eleven-member team from the Binghamton University Scholars Program at Binghamton University placed third in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, Vehicle Incursion Prevention System. Professors Chad Nixon and Zachary Staff served as faculty advisors. Full Design

Airport Operations And Maintenance Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A four-member team from the School of Systems and Enterprises at Stevens Institute of Technology received top honors in the Airport Operations and Maintenance category with its design titled, SimpleQ. Professor Eirik Hole served as faculty advisor. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - A four-member team from the University of California, Berkeley placed second in the Airport Operations and Maintenance category with its design titled, Drone-enabled Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Removal System in Ad Hoc Situations. Dr. Jasenka Rakas served as faculty advisor. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - A five-member team from the Aerospace Engineering Department at Georgia Institute of Technology placed third in the Airport Operations and Maintenance category with its design titled, Just in Time. Dr. John Paul Clarke served as faculty advisor. Full Design

Airport Management and Planning Challenge:

  • 1st
    First Place - A four-member team from the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Rhode Island received top honors in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, The Wingman 360: A Practical Approach to Automated Wingtip Collision Avoidance. Dr. Bahram Nassersharif served as faculty advisor. Full Design
  • 2nd
    Second Place - Two proposals tied for second place in the Airport Management and Planning category, one from Old Dominion University and the other from the University of Texas at Austin.
    1. A student from the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at Old Dominion University won with its design titled, Multi-Objective Simulation-based Optimization of Runway Operations Scheduling Using a Hybrid Metaheuristic Algorithm. Dr. Ghaith Rabadi served as faculty advisor. Full Design
    2. A fourteen-member team from the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin won with its design titled, Planning the Intergenerational Airport: Making the Airport Better for Everyone. Dr. Sandra Rosenbloom served as faculty advisor. Full Design
  • 3rd
    Third Place - A three-member team from the Aviation and Transportation Technology Department at Purdue University placed third in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, Semi-Autonomous Electric Taxi System. Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty advisor. Full Design

Honorable Mentions given to:

A six-member team from the from the Aviation Safety and Security Department at the University of Southern California won an honorable mention in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, Design of a Robust, Inexpensive System to Enhance Drone Flight Data. Dr. Thomas Anthony and Dr. Daniel Scalese served as faculty advisors.

A ten-member team from the Binghamton University Scholars Program at Binghamton University won an honorable mention in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, Capital Improvement Plan Automated Tool. Professors Chad Nixon and Zachary Staff served as faculty advisors.
